Roughly five hours of gameplay on the clock later, and I got Cheatin' Chump. But after SwankyKlubba's recent thread on the GBA ports, I decided I finally wanted to put this to rest, so I sat down with an emulator and a completely clean slate DKC3 GBA, entered TUFFER and nothing else, and got to work playing the game to 105% for the second time in my life. That was a bit of an excuse though, in large part I just didn't want to put in the effort. I actually have a working Gameshark somewhere, I think, but of course no one ever made a code for deleting all save data on DKC3, so unless I learned how to hack it myself that wasn't going to work either. It's similar to how the Stop n Swop items can only be obtained once per cart, unless you hack them back out. There's no factory reset option in DKC3 GBA, so short of doing some mad science on my cart, I couldn't play the game without the menu cheats activated. Only problem was, I couldn't really test this. even TUFFER, the one you need to enter to get to 105% in the first place? So I had a simpler idea I needed to test first: what if, not knowing this, the DKC3 GBA team had simply set it so that any cheat code would give you Cheatin' Chump. It doesn't make too much sense for this to be possible in the first place, but there are some pretty wacky oversights in these ports, so it really couldn't be ruled out that adding this new feature caused such a complication.īut even assuming that's possible, the original DKC3 is programmed so that Cheatin' Chump can only be attained through use of two specific codes: LIVES, and ASAVE. There are cheats which permanently add minigames and a sound test to the main menu, which could theoretically put a 'cheat' flag on all current and future files. A quirk of DKC3 GBA that is absent from the original is universal cheat codes. There was a major complication to finding out what was wrong though. I was reminded of this years later, which made me curious if there was in fact something wrong here. I did it once as a kid, and I got Cheatin' Chump, even though I thought I hadn't input any cheats on that file. For a long time, I've had the suspicion that 105% completion in the GBA version of DKC3 is somehow bugged.
